Un prix Teodoro Obiang à l´Unesco ?

Le 11/01/2010 - Selon nos informations, la nouvelle directrice générale de l´Unesco, Irina Bokova, cauchemarde toutes les nuits sur le projet d´attribution du ”Prix international Unesco-Obiang Nguema Mbasogo pour la recherche en sciences de la vie”. Un Prix qui dispose d´un budget de 3 millions $ versé sur un compte spécial à l´Unesco. Et c´est Irina Bokova qui devra remettre le diplôme et le prix de 300 000 $ au futur lauréat, lors d´une cérémonie officielle, soit à Paris, soit à Malabo, en présence du président équato-guinéen. Or, plusieurs pays occidentaux et associations des droits de l´homme font pression sur Irina Bokova pour ne pas ”avaliser” ce prix au leader d´un pays dont le classement pour les droits humains n´est pas au top. Problème : ce n´est pas Irina Bokova qui décide mais un conseil exécutif de trente membres présidé pour la période 2009-2011 par la Russie… A suivre..

Dear Mrs. Bokova,

On September 29, 2008, Equatorial Guinea´s government asked Unesco to establish the Unesco-Nguema Mbasogo Prize, to be funded by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo´ s Charity, with 3 US million dollars.(http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0016/001629/162938s.pdf)

Respected international organisations dealing with human rights, let alone the US Department of State and various UN bodies and representatives, have documented many times, since Obiang took power by force in 1979, gross human rights violations in that country.

US Dpt. of State on Human Right in Equatorial Guinea:

”The following human rights problems were reported: abridgement of citizens´ right to change their government; instances of physical abuse of prisoners and detainees by security forces; poor conditions in prisons and detention facilities; impunity; arbitrary arrest, detention, and incommunicado detention; harassment and deportation of foreign residents with limited due process; judicial corruption and lack of due process; restrictions on the right to privacy; restrictions on freedom of speech and of the press; restrictions on the right of assembly, association, and movement; government corruption; violence and discrimination against women; suspected trafficking in persons; discrimination against ethnic minorities; and restrictions on labor rights.”

Special UN Rapporteur on Torture in Equatorial Guinea:

” absence of an independent judiciary, endemic corruption, arbitrary detention, evidence obtained through torture and the almost total impunity for those torturing prisoners are among the factors contributing to the absence of human rights for detainees in Equatorial Guinea.”

Amnesty International Submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review Sixth session of the UPR Working Group of the Human Rights Council:

”Section C highlights Amnesty International’s concerns about human rights violations, specifically arbitrary detention; prolonged detention without charge or trial; incommunicado detention; abductions from neighbouring countries and enforced disappearances; torture and other ill-treatment and death in detention; and unfair trials.”

It is wellknown that violations include harassment, ilegal detention, torture in prison and even killing of political oponents, many students, teachers and lecturers amongst them.

At the same time, the fact that under Obiang´s rule there is neither free press nor freedom of speech, research, while cultural and social rights are missing, makes it inconceivable that Unesco could even accept to study such an abhorrent proposal.

If Unesco falls into Obiang´s trap, it can only win a fraction of the 3 million and lose all credit.

Please assure the international community that Unesco has nothing at all to do with Obiang´s proposed plan and that Unesco is making its best to support the people whose human rights are being violated by him in Equatorial Guinea and beyond.
